KAREN Bampton | SECRETARY | CLINPATH LABORATORIES

I didn't know much about histo when I first started with Adelaide Pathology Partners.  My degree is Animal Science and we only just touched on the subject of histology.  I was also doing a post-grad diploma in climate science, so I really did not expect to be where I am today!

It didn't take long for me to fall in love with histopathology though. Grossing has always been my favourite and I was lucky to be trained in complex specimen grossing when we merged with Clinpath.  There is always something new to see everyday and I'm always learning.  I love the challenge that comes with complex grossing and my favourite specimens to cut are lungs, bowels and kidneys for cancer.

I attended HGSA educational sessions prior to joining and becoming the Secretary. The moment I joined HGSA, my passion for promoting further education grew. The Facebook pages and Newsletter became my thing and I can't imagine not doing either! I have also since become a Uni demonstrator for histo and hope to do more teaching in the future.

I love sharing my passion with others.  It's always such a great, rewarding feeling seeing so many attend our local events and National Conferences.  We are very grateful for all our followers.  We are always looking to do bigger and better, so thank you for all your support.

SHARIN PRAKASH | TREASURER | SA PATHOLOGY FMC

HGSA Member since 1997  HGSA Treasurer 2007 – Current

My Laboratory Career began in 1984 as a Technical Officer at CSIRO Division of Human Nutrition, ADELAIDE.

In 1985, I joined IMVS, ADELAIDE Bone and Joint Research Lab as a Technical Officer as a Grant funded employee.  From 1986 to current, I became a permanent employee of IMVS, now S A Pathology, Anatomical Pathology as Technical Officer, having obtained a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science.

With continuing education whilst working full time, I have also obtained a Bachelor in Medical Science and Post Graduate Certificate in Surgical Pathology Cut-Up and now as Supervising Senior Medical Scientist. During my career, I have worked in the Renal Lab, Neuropathology Lab, Gastroenterology Lab, Electron Microscopy Lab, Immunohistochemistry Lab, Cut Up and Main Lab. I am very proud of my work as I find that each day even though same, is different as we have different patients and being diagnostic are helping to improve the quality and saving lives each day.

I have also in my role as Treasurer of HGSA, together with our small committee, have hosted 4 Combined HGV/HGSA State Conferences and 2 National Histology Conferences in 2009 and 2019. I am currently, together with our Secretary Karen Bampton, representing HGSA in the newly inaugurated during the 9th NHC in Adelaide, the Histology Group of Australia (HGA).

I look forward to working with our new younger and very enthusiastic committee.

Jessica Hoptroff | committee member | Clinpath Laboratories

I graduated from UniSA’s Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) in 2018. I’m currently employed as a medical scientist at Clinpath Laboratories which is providing me the opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge in a practical Anatomical Pathology setting. I’m eager to represent the division and to assist in furthering the education of the histology community.

I recently came on board with SA Pathology in July 2019. I graduated with a Bachelor of Health Sciences from the University of Adelaide in 2015 however I decided to try out a career in digital marketing before pursuing my dream job in histology. I love the versatility histology has to offer - no two days are the same! There is always something new to learn which is why I really enjoy attending HGSA educational sessions. Now as a committee member, one of my responsibilities is to update and maintain this HGSA website - combining the skills I gained from my previous role with my love for histology.

I graduated from the University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine in 2016. During my degree I completed 13 week placements with Healthscope Pathology’s Histopathology Department and SA Pathology at the Noarlunga Hospital.

Upon graduating I began my career with Australian Clinical Labs. Initially I worked across the departments of Specimen Reception, Microbiology and Histopathology before eventually transitioning permanently into the Histopathology Department. Having developed a number of skills while working at Australian Clinical Labs, I decided it was time to take on new challenges and successfully applied for a position with SA Pathology’s Surgical Pathology Department at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in November 2019, before also taking on a role in the Electron Microscopy unit in 2020.

Rebecca Kordic | committee | CLINPATH LABORATORIES

I started working in histo as a casual on embedding while I looked for nutritionist jobs after finishing my studies. However, my intrigue with histo started to overtake my interest in nutrition, so I went on to gain a full time role and started learning other histo tasks. My favorite was grossing, which really stretched my brain and kept me on my toes, continuously learning something new. I then was fortunate enough to be able to learn the cut up of complex specimens, a task that regularly brings something new and interesting to the table. My favorite specimens to gross are bowels and kidneys for cancer.

I love to meet others who are passionate about pathology and histo in particular. Joining the committee as a member has allowed me to meet and work with others who possess this passion. Organising events to bring together all those interested in histo regardless of where they work or even study is very rewarding. I hope to continue to encourage others to join in and learn more about this fascinating discipline!
